Data science have huge number of applications plus understanding data science in one go is not easy. It needs patience and endurance to start with which subject one is related to and how to proceed towards target. 

Data science have multiple sub domains. It is useless to go through each and every spam which is shared on Facebook. Although thousands of software engineers claim to be data scientists, however, only few of them are actually familiar to data scientist.

There is a common say "Data scientist is sexiest job of 21st century". 

MOOCs are good for those who have elementary knowledge of the subject.
